LOCATION: Apricale, Liguria, Italy
The artist’s eye was caught by these three men sitting on a low wall above the village square during the annual La Sagra della Pansarola, an autumn festival in which huge numbers of small doughnuts (pansarole) are fried by the village women in giant vats of hot oil set out in the square of the medieval hilltop village of Apricale, in the foothills of the Maritime Alps. The pansarole are then freely distributed to those who watch on, accompanied by hot zabaglione. The occasion includes a religious procession through the streets and the village brass band playing in the square as darkness falls. Brilliant!
